The term fish-eye was coined to refer to a lens capable of imaging an entire hemisphere; providing a circular view that a fish looking upward at the surface of the water might see. It should really be called a "fish view lens" since the eye of the fish probably is not responsible for what it sees as much as the fact that its eye is immersed in water.
